Springfield Scally, the long-time servant of English trainer Steve Gollings, has been retired.

The 11-year-old son of Scallywag won nine races during a six-year career and amassed over £100,000 in prize money.

“He’s the most tough, game and genuine horse I have ever trained,” Gollings told the Racing Post.

“There is nothing wrong with him, we just though he deserves a rest.”

Springfield Scally’s most impressive display came when galloping his rivals into the ground to score by 25 lengths in the Ladbroke Handicap Hurdle at Uttoxeter in 2001.

His last race came at Haydock on Saturday when the veteran finished 12th of 18 in the Freephone Stanleybet Long Distance Handicap Hurdle.
