Snowbound Newcastle abandoned
Officials at Newcastle racecourse have been forced to abandon Monday's meeting, with the course covered in snow and little prospect of it clearing in time.
Clerk of the course James Armstrong said: "The snow hasn't shifted at all since yesterday and there's three to seven inches all around the track.
"The forecasters say we'll be lucky to get temperatures up above plus four today, which is actually colder than yesterday, and it due to get down to minus four tonight.
"There's a lot of snow to get rid of in a short space of time and it would have taken a small miracle."
