Mick Fitzgerald has issued an upbeat bulletin on his recovery from the broken arm he sustained in a fall at Kempton last weekend.

It was initially feared that he might struggle to recover in time for the Cheltenham Festival, which is now just five weeks away.

Fitzgerald missed out on a big winner at Newbury yesterday when Geos took the Tote Gold Trophy, but he is pleased with the way his recovery is going and is confident of returning in time for the highlight of the jumps season.

“I have been to see (physio) ‘Rabbit’ Slattery and she’s very pleased with the progress that my arm is making,” he said.

“It’s a very clean break, not a complicated fracture and there has been no need for it to be in plaster or anything like that.

“Because it seems to be healing so well, I am confident it’s just a question of whether I return to riding a week or just a few days before Cheltenham.”
