Davenport for Leopardstown

Davenport Milenium is set to bypass an engagement at Cheltenham on Saturday in favour of a tilt at the AIG (Europe) Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown the following afternoon.

Trainer Willie Mullins had been considering the Byrne Bros Cleeve Hurdle for the eight-year-old but after discussing plans with owner, Noel O’Callaghan, it was decided to keep Davenport Milenium nearer home.

Explaining the decision Mullins told the Racing Post: “We’ve come down in favour of Leopardstown.

“Running closer to home makes more sense, especially with the forecast for the rest of the week being quite good.”

Davenport Milenium exercised at the Curragh on Tuesday morning and Mullins added: “He worked all right, no more than that, and will take his chance.”

Davenport Milenium is a general 16-1 chance for the Smurfit Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham in March.
