Makybe Diva became the 14th mare to win the Tooheys New Melbourne Cup when finishing fast and wide under Glen Boss to take the coveted prize in Flemington, Australia today.

She’s Archie was second ahead of the British-trained Jardines Lookout.

Godolphin's Millstreet settled down at the head of affairs, tracked by Zagalia and the Dubai team's other runner, the gambled-on Mamool with Hugs Dancer and Jardines Lookout held up in mid-division.

As the 23-runner field turned for home Dean McKeown made his move on Hugs Dancer as Millstreet and Mamool gave way and Zagalia went to the front.

But Hugs Dancer’s effort was short lived as Boss produced Makybe Diva down the centre of the track and soon taking over Hall’s six-year-old ran on strongly to hold She’s Archie.

Darryll Holland conjured a good run out of Jardines Lookout, who kept on strongly to claim third prize.

Jardines Lookout was returned at 40-1 with the winner a 7-1 chance. She's Archie was also 40-1 while fourth home Pentastic was returned at 10-1.

After a massive on course gamble Mamool went off the 11-2 favourite but dropped right out of contention in the straight.

After weighing in Boss, winning his first Melbourne Cup, told attheraces: “She gave me a great ride through the race. I just stayed towards the fence and the runs just kept coming. It was just like I was in a zone. Everywhere I went things were happening for me. It was just like it was meant to be.

“I’ve got to thank David for giving this horse such a great prep.”
