Vinnie to staick to Leger trail
Vinnie Roe is set to bid for a fifth St Leger victory at Longchamp later this month.
Connections had been considering another tilt at the Melbourne Cup with the five-year-old, who has won a record three Irish St Legers as well as the French equivalent, the Prix Royal-Oak, in 2001.
Vinnie Roe finished fourth behind stable companion Media Puzzle in last year’s Melbourne Cup but his trainer, Dermot Weld, said today he could instead be aimed at this season’s Prix Royal-Oak on October 26.
Weld said: “Vinnie Roe is much more likely to go for the French Leger than the Melbourne Cup.
“I’ve spoken to the owners and the possibility of winning a fifth Leger holds more attraction for them.”
Weld’s promising juvenile Grey Swallow could bypass next Saturday’s Darley Dewhurst Stakes in favour of a tilt at the Racing Post Trophy the following week.
“He is most likely to go for the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster,” Weld added.
