Dettori expects better from Mamool
Frankie Dettori is hoping Mamool can put a disappointing Royal Ascot run behind him in the Stan James Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury on Saturday.
The four-year-old last ran in the Gold Cup at the Royal meeting over a marathon two and a half miles.
That was the first time the son of In The Wings had tackled the trip and Dettori thinks the one mile, five and a half furlongs of the Newbury Group Two race will suit his mount much better.
âThe last half a mile was a real struggle and heâs had some time off, so this is a recovery mission, trying to get him back for the autumn,â Dettori told attheraces.
âI think the horse could run well, but heâs not absolutely buzzing for it. This is a stepping stone to better things in the autumn.â
Mamool won the Yorkshire Cup earlier this season and last year took the Queenâs Vase at Royal Ascot.
Dettoriâs mount will carry a penalty because of those wins and the Italian thinks it will be a big ask in a high-class field that includes Marcus Tregoningâs Mubtaker and Mark Johnstonâs prolific winner Systematic, who will be making his seasonal bow.
âThis is going to be a very tough race with Systematic, Mubtaker and Millenary,â Dettori added.
"Itâs going to be a good Group Two and my horse carries a penalty, so itâs going to be very tough for him.â
