Spencer in tune with Songlark

Jamie Spencer is expecting a big run from Songlark in the Sagitta 2000 Guineas tomorrow.

Godolphin’s second string was the subject of a significant gamble for the colts’ Classic at Newmarket.

Coral have cut the price of the former Andre Fabre inmate to 14-1 from 20-1 after a telephone tipping line picked him as their likely Guineas winner.

William Hill have also slashed his odds, with the firm now going 10-1 from 20-1.

The son of Singspiel, who won a Group Three race in France as a juvenile, is set to be partnered by Jamie Spencer, as Godolphin’s first jockey Frankie Dettori has elected to ride Lateen Sails.

Last time out Songlark finished second to Victory Moon in the UAE Derby at Nad Al Sheba and Spencer is expecting a good run at Headquarters.

“I’m looking forward to riding Songlark. We know he will get the trip and he will like the ground so I’m expecting a good run from him,” he said.

“He was beaten by a four-year-old last time so it was a good effort from a three-year-old at that time of the year.”

Another jockey looking forward to his ride is Willie Supple, who partners Muqbil in the colts Classic before riding Khulood in the Sagitta 1000 Guineas on Sunday.

Supple only picked up the rides on the pair after Richard Hills picked up a lengthy suspension that ruled him out of the meeting.

However, Muqbil, who is trained by John Dunlop, was ridden by Supple when landing the Greenham Stakes at Newbury last month and Supple is looking forward to renewing the partnership.

He said: “I am very pleased to get rides in the first two Classics of the season. The only thing is that they have come in unfortunate circumstances in as much as Richard would have ridden them but he is suspended.

“The colts’ race looks more open. I won the Greenham at Newbury on him and he did it very well that day. He goes there with as good a chance as anything else in the race and I’m looking forward to riding both of them.

“As I said I feel sorry for Richard, but it’s good from my point of view to get the opportunity and I may be even happier come Monday,” he added.

Sagitta 2000 Guineas betting: 2-1 Hold That Tiger, 4-1 Lateen Sails, 6-1 Refuse To Bend, 9-1 Tomahawk, Tout Seul, 10-1 Muqbil, 14-1 Audience, Hurricane Alan, 25-1 Songlark, 33-1 Indian Haven, Saturn, Zafeen, 40-1 Lundy’s Lane, Norse Dancer, 50-1 bar.
