Best Mate became the first horse since L’Escargot in 1970 and 1971 to win consecutive Tote Cheltenham Gold Cups with a spectacular display in chasing’s blue riband event today.
Given a patient ride by Jim Culloty, Henrietta Knight’s stable star was always travelling strongly and pulled his way into a challenging position at the top of the hill.
He took control after jumping the third last fence and was never in danger afterwards as he strode clear to land the top prize in great style.
The 13-8 favourite scored by 10 lengths from Truckers Tavern (33-1) with Harbour Pilot (40-1) third.
Irish hope Beef or Salmon was a faller at the first fence.
