Northerly suffers shock defeat
Northerly, the Cox Plate winner, suffered a shock defeat after going down to the apprentice-ridden Mr Trickster in the Victoria Gold Cup at Caulfield on Saturday.
Mr Trickster (Craig Newitt) made the most of a 19lb concession to beat the hotpot by three quarters of a length on a slippery track.
Patrick Payne, Northerly’s rider, said: “He did slip a few times near the home turn, but all credit to the winner. He made us carry our weight (9st 6lb), and we were never travelling well enough to get to him.”
Northerly was beaten in the same race last year by Greenstone Charm.
