Curragh-based Dermot Weld was named International Trainer at a glittering ceremony in London today.

Weld was selected at the 36th Horserace Writers & Photographers Association’ Derby Awards Luncheon at the Royal Lancaster Hotel following the exploits of Media Puzzle and Vinnie Roe, first and fourth respectively in last month’s Melbourne Cup.

Tony McCoy, third in last night’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year, took the National Hunt jockey award with Best Mate’s handler Henrietta Knight getting the jump trainers’ trophy.

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson, whose Rock Of Gibraltar (trained by Aidan O'Brien) broke Mill Reef’s record by winning seven consecutive Group One races, was named Owner of the Year.

Former jockey Tom O’Ryan of the Racing Post was crowned Journalist of the Year.

O’Ryan, who rode regularly for Pat Rohan and Peter Easterby.

Richard Hughes was named Flat Jockey of the Year while the award for Flat trainer went to Middleham-based Mark Johnston.
