Aintree hero Red Marauder is on course to return to action in a staying hurdle at Newbury on Saturday after working on Redcar beach.

The 12-year-old has not raced since he won the Martell Grand National in April 2001 and his racing career had been in doubt, but he has been pleasing trainer Norman Mason in his recent work.

“He was ridden by Claire Metcalfe who looks after him at home and he will run in the three-mile hurdle on Hennessy day,” said Richard Guest, stable jockey and assistant to trainer Mason.

“We are looking forward to it. As far as Red Marauder is concerned we will see how we go after Saturday.”

Red Marauder is among 12 entries for the RBI Promotions Long Distance Hurdle over an extended three miles.
