Frankie Dettori today vowed that the Tooheys New Melbourne Cup will be run in the European style rather than using the stop-start tactics often employed by the local jockeys.

Speaking at a media breakfast on the eve of the big race, the Italian promised to “take the sting out of the legs of the local challengers” when he partners Irish St Leger runner-up Pugin as he makes his eighth bid for victory in the race that stops a nation.
