Roe repeats Leger success

Vinnie Roe repeated his victory of 12 months ago in the Jefferson Smurfit Memorial Irish St Leger at the Curragh today.

Dermot Weld’s 4-7 chance was held up in third place as Pugin set a steady pace with British raiders Millenary, second last year, and Warrsan racing in touch.

The order remained the same as the eight-strong field turned for home where Pugin stepped on the gas but Pat Smullen on Vinnie Roe was not found wanting and cruised up to challenge two furlongs out.

Vinnie Roe soon asserted and staying on strongly came home a length clear of Pugin (10-1) with Aidan O’Brien’s Ballingarry (8-1) half a length away in third.

The Clive Brittain-trained Warrsan kept on well for fourth while John Dunlop’s Millenary faded out of contention in the closing stages.
