Mansell still in critical condition

Leading conditional jockey Jimmy Mansell remains in a stable but critical condition today after his fall at Ballinrobe on Sunday.

The young rider, who is a champion claimer, was involved in a pile-up in division two of the two-mile handicap hurdle when his mount Showboat Melody fell heavily.

Mansell was knocked unconscious and was taken to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar where he was found to have suffered serious head injuries and was put on a life support machine.

Turf Club medical officer Dr Walter Halley said : “Jimmy Mansell is stable but still critical.

“His condition has stabilised. He’s off the life support machine and they are monitoring his condition in the Mayo General Hospital.

“The scans taken on Sunday and Tuesday are consistent and it’s a matter of keeping him under observation and doing the various tests.”

Niall Madden, 16, who was brought down on Peerage in the incident sustained two broken wrists.

He has had his left wrist operated on and has been discharged from hospital in Dublin.
