Coughing Hawk Wing to miss York

Aidan O’Brien has ruled Hawk Wing out of next month’s Juddmonte International Stakes at York as the colt has succumbed to a virus which has hit his string.

And the all-conquering Irish trainer admitted that a “majority” of the three-year-olds at his Ballydoyle stable are suffering from an illness which has hit the yard in the past few days.

But running plans for High Chaparral are as yet unaffected as the dual Derby winner is currently on a break before being prepared for an autumn campaign.

The Derby runner-up Hawk Wing had been due to bid to follow up his Coral Eurobet Eclipse Stakes triumph in the International at York on August 20.

But O’Brien said: “He won’t run at York, a lot of our horses are coughing - we’ll play it by ear, day by day.

“The last few days it has just taken over. The majority of the three-year-olds have it at the moment but we will wait and see how long it lasts.

“But High Chaparral is not doing much because he was coming back for an autumn campaign so we will wait and see what’s going to happen.

“We haven’t had anything like this before so it is a learning experience.”
