Bunbury target for Wokingham hero
Capricho, winner of the Wokingham Handicap at Royal Ascot, will be aiming to follow up in the Ladbrokes Bunbury Cup at Newmarket this week.
The five-year-old is set to take his place in the seven-furlong event on the final day of the July Meeting and he will be looking to make it a handicap double.
Capricho’s win in the Wokingham was the first time he had got on the scoresheet since his win in a seven-furlong rated stakes at Newmarket and trainer John Akehurst reports him to be in good order after his Royal success.
He said today: ‘‘He’s come out of it absolutely fine and the plan is to go to Newmarket.’’
Capricho has run well over both six and seven furlongs but he has done most of his winning over the longer trip on easier tracks.
The stiff six furlongs at Ascot suited him but Akehurst admits his hand has been slightly forced by a lack of opportunities for his charge.
‘‘He has won at Newmarket before and he’s not in the Stewards’ Cup so it’s really the only alternative for him,’’ Akehurst said.
