Eddery goes second on winners' list
Pat Eddery drew level with the career total of Lester Piggott on Tuesday and he went into second place on his own on the all-time list of winning jockeys in Britain at Goodwood on Friday evening.
He was seen at his vintage best on the Alan Jarvis-trained Lady Pahia as the combination got up by a neck to justify 2-1 favouritism in the Mortarmill Organic Dairy Fillies’ Stakes.
It was victory number 4,494 for the 11-times champion jockey and only the legendary Sir Gordon Richards now lies in front of him on 4,870 wins.
Eddery, 50, has been associated with some of the great names of the turf over the years such as Grundy, Detroit, El Gran Senor, Golden Fleece, Quest For Fame, Sadler’s Wells, Dancing Brave, Zafonic and Warning.
And Goodwood’s general manager and clerk of the course Rob Fabricius was delighted that the rider had achieved his landmark at the famous track.
‘‘We’re thrilled,’’ he told attheraces. ‘‘It’s obviously marvellous to see him achieve that landmark here at Goodwood, particularly riding for Alan Jarvis who I think he has ridden for for many, many years.
‘‘Equally of course he rides regularly for John Dunlop and John is a director of Goodwood.
‘‘We feel we are very close to Pat and he has done us proud tonight.’’
