Keane banned at Southwell

Conditional jockey Vinnie Keane was banned for a week for riding a finish a circuit too early at Southwell on Thursday.

He made the blunder on the Brian Ellison-trained 12-1 shot Sam Quale in the Come Racing at Southwell 0870 220 2332 Handicap Chase over an extended three miles.

The Irishman miscalculated the distance of the race and appeared to ride a finish as he sent his mount to the front approaching the winning post on the second circuit of a three-lap race.

As the field set off into the country again he realised his mistake and carried on but pulled Sam Quale up after jumping two fences down the back straight.

An inquiry was called and Keane was found in breach of rule 156 (ii) for ‘‘riding a finish a circuit too early and misjudging the distance of the race’’.

His ban covers racing on May 18, May 22-26 and May 28.
