Horse Racing: Atavus on right track
George Margarson's stable star Atavus pleased connections on Wednesday morning ahead of a planned return to action at the weekend.
The Newmarket trainer has entered last season's Hungerford Stakes winner in the Group Three Leicestershire Stakes and Sandown's Group Two Attheraces Mile on Saturday - and the handler is favouring the East Midlands track for the five-year-old, who is at his best on a fast surface.
"I think we'll have to go to Leicester though he does come out pretty well at Sandown on the ratings - it's not the strongest Group Two in the world," Margarson said.
"I'm still wavering but because he's a seven-furlong specialist we've probably got to go to Leicester but I wouldn't be surprised if I do switch him at the last minute.
"He's got to run somewhere to get ready for the Lockinge (at Newbury on May 18).
"He worked his normal self and picked up nicely. He worked over on the racecourse on the peat moss gallop over seven furlongs.
"Four furlongs and then round the bend and he picked up round the bend over the last three furlongs and quickened five clear of his lead horse.
"Jamie Mackay rode him and he was happy. He said the horse felt real good."
