Racing: Summoner heads Lockinge field
Summoner, who sprang a 33-1 surprise as Godolphin’s second string for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, heads 27 entries for the Juddmonte Lockinge Stakes at Newbury.
The four-year-old made all the running at Ascot last September when accounting for his better fancied stable companion Noverre, who is also entered, by a length and a half.
Godolphin’s trainer Saeed bin Suroor has put five horses in the £160,000 contest over the straight mile at the Berkshire track on May 18 the others being Best of the Bests, Masterful and Tempting Fate.
James Fanshawe’s Warningford, beaten a neck by Medicean in this race last May and the Geoff Wragg-trained Swallow Flight, who was a neck away third, could do battle again.
The sole French entry is Proudwings, a winner in six countries, who was only seventh of eight behind Summoner in the QE II. The six-year-old mare joined John Hammond’s yard after being bought by Teruya Yoshida at the end of last year. She had previously been trained in Germany
Aidan O’Brien provides the only two Irish entries in Bach and Shoal Creek.
