Dermot Weld top trainer for 29th time in 30 years

Dermot Weld was the Galway Festival’s top trainer for the 29th time in the last 30 years. He had five winners, while Willie Mullins trained eight winners and Tony Martin saddled six.

However, the point s based system of 5 for a win, 3 for a second and 1 for a third meant that Weld finished on 57 points, one ahead of Mullins. Ruby Walsh was the top jump jockey and Fran Berry, with four winners, became top flat jockey.

Fran Berry said: “It was an unbelievable week. It is 10 years ago since I won this award. You start the Galway week hoping for a winner or two at best but the week has gone unbelievably well and it’s brilliant.”

Commenting on his winners he said: “Boherbuoy was very good and Whatsforuwontgobyu won well in the end. His hurdle form was quite good and he transferred that to the flat. Dark Crusader is back to her best. She has a bit of class and things haven’t gone her way in the last 18 months but she got it together now.”

Kevin Prendergast and Willie Mullins shared the honours in respect of the highest number of best turned out prizes.

*The final day of the 2015 Festival attracted a crowd of 12.696, down from 13,788 last year.

The Tote Aggregate of €528,601 reflected an increase from €510,833 in 2014, but the Bookmakers’ turnover of €626,986 was down on last year (€675,334).
