He may have been out of luck in the feature race for only the second time in 10 years but Aidan O’Brien still had a say on Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby day at the Curragh as Painted Cliffs sprang a surprise to win the Group 2 Gain Railway Stakes.

The odds suggested this would be a showdown between Rockaway Valley and Log Out Island but Painted Cliffs, virtually friendless in the market at 7/1, was steered to victory by an enterprising ride from the peerless Ryan Moore.
