Kingman rules at Cartier Awards

After suffering his sole career defeat in the Qipco 2000 Guineas, the outstanding three-year-old colt proved himself the best miler in Europe with victories in the Irish 2,000 Guineas, St James’s Palace Stakes, Sussex Stakes and the Prix Jacques le Marois.

In the Horse of the Year category, Kingman triumphed over last year’s winner Treve, Australia and Noble Mission.

Kingman also took the honours in the Cartier Three-Year-Old colt division ahead of dual Derby winner Australia, The Grey Gatsby and Charm Spirit.

Noble Mission, a full brother to Frankel, was named Cartier Older Horse of the Year from Treve.

Taghrooda is the Cartier Three-Year-Old Filly for 2014 while the Edward Lynam-trained Sole Power just got the nod over his stable companion Slade Power in the Cartier Sprinter division thanks to his victories in the King’s Stand Stakes and Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes.

Leading Light, trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by Joseph O’Brien for a Coolmore syndicate, was crowned Cartier Stayer for 2014 after a close fight with Irish St Leger scorer Brown Panther.

Coolmore and both O’Briens also enjoyed success in the Cartier Two-Year-Old colt category with Gleneagles, winner of the National Stakes and first past the post in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere only to be demoted following an inquiry.

Tiggy Wiggy, winner of the Group One Cheveley Park Stakes, was named Cartier Two-Year-Old Filly of the Year to cap an excellent first season for champion trainer Richard Hannon.
