Bronze Angel camp pondering Darley raid
A strong gallop over nine furlongs on fast ground are the key elements for Bronze Angel, who thrust his trainer Marcus Tregoning back into the limelight when repeating his victory of 2012 in the big autumn handicap.
Bronze Angel tried to follow up his first Cambridgeshire success in the Darley Stakes over the same course and distance two years ago, but things were not quite in his favour and he could only finish fifth behind Mull Of Killough.
“It’s just a matter of getting everything right,” Tregoning said. “We didn’t have to claim off him, as it turned out, but I thought the 5lb was a good advantage. That’s why Louis (Steward) took the ride.
“It’s not very good for Martin (Dwyer), who had ridden him well at York, but I’m sure he will understand. It’s just the way it had to be.
“On the Friday of Champions weekend, there’s a Group Three (Darley Stakes), but maybe the ground might not be right by then.
“I suppose I’ll probably have to have a go at something like that.
“He’s a top-class handicapper, but maybe Group races might be too much for him. He may have a shot at it, but only if the ground is right.
“The mile and one furlong is a key factor. He loves big fields and quite likes a scrum. A strong gallop is really what he wants.”
