Byrnes sets sights on Cheltenham

Charles Byrnes is looking forward to running Trifolium and Arnaud at the Cheltenham Festival following their fine efforts at the weekend.

Byrnes sets sights on Cheltenham

Trifolium booked his ticket for the Racing Post Arkle Challenge Trophy with his victory in the Irish equivalent at Leopardstown on Sunday.

The County Limerick trainer will give Arnaud several options at jump racing’s premier meeting after he went close to making all the running when second to Valdez in the Racing Post Lightning Novices’ Chase at Doncaster on Saturday.

“It was a great win. The plan is to go for the Arkle at Cheltenham next,” said Byrnes.

“Arnaud ran well. We’ll see where we go at Cheltenham with him.

“He’s in the Arkle and we might put him in the Grand Annual and the Jewson as well, but there’s a possibility we might keep him for Aintree.

“Both are good jumpers but he wouldn’t have the scope of Trifolium.”
