Silver can lay down gauntlet to rivals

Silver Gauntlet is a hopeful nap choice in the Irish Stallion Farms’ EBF Median Auction Maiden on, at least from a punting point of view, a horrible card at Roscommon tonight.

Silver can lay down gauntlet to rivals

Dermot Weld’s horses are in fine shape right now and this grey son of Verglas might be another for him.

Truth to tell, he only hinted at possessing ability on his debut at Tipperary last month. There were only just horses in that contest, but among them were Michael Halford’s well-regarded Warbird and an Aidan O’Brien Galileo newcomer, Illinois.

Wardbird went off at 4-7, but was no match for Illinois, going down by three and a quarter lengths.

Silver Gauntlet was a further three lengths away in third, but was noted staying on steadily at the end of that extended seven furlongs, after being outpaced in the first half of the contest. This is not a race that will take a lot of winning and one’s belief in the selection to do the business would be greatly increased should he prove strong in the market.

The somewhat enigmatic Sweet My Lord has been afforded a good opportunity in the Athleague Hurdle.

He has become too unreliable to be put forward with any great confidence, but does have between 7lbs and 40lbs in hand of his four rivals.

Sweet My Lord was, however, working into a far more competitive heat at Galway last time, won by stable companion, Call Me Bubbles, when slipping up going to the third last.

Hopefully, he will now be on a going day and, that being the case, certainly has the capacity to make short work of this opposition.
