€6,000 prize fund for Strand Races

The picturesque village of Courtmacsherry will have its annual day at the races on Sunday as the sand bank will undergo its transformation for the Strand Races that carry a prize fund of some €6,000.

Revived in 2000 as a Millennium project, the event continues to grow in popularity. The organising team are hoping that the current spate of good weather will continue and will make for a good day’s racing.

On Saturday, when the tide is out, the organising team will plot the course under the stewardship of chairman, Denis O’Donovan for an eight race card. The feature race is the Lislee Derby for the O’Donovan Brothers Perpetual Trophy sponsored by Springmount Stud.

Since its revival, young jockeys like Danny Mullins, Wayne Lordan, Chris Hayes and Billy Lee have all raced in Courtmacsherry.
