Wigmore may need outing

Michael Bell fears Wigmore Hall made need the outing when he returns to action in the Princess of Wales’s boylesports.com Stakes at Newmarket today.

Wigmore may need outing

The globe-trotting six-year-old has had a longer than usual break after being off-colour, but Bell is pleased with his stable stalwart’s homework ahead of his return.

“He had a break, but this was more an enforced one due to ill health. He will probably need the run, ideally he could have had another 10 days, but that said he has often gone well when fresh,” said the Newmarket trainer.

“He appears in very good form, though. After this he’ll go on his travels again, most likely to Arlington and Woodbine again.”

Wigmore Hall took in both North American venues last year and ran in Dubai in the spring.

Jamie Spencer believes his mount’s versatility will stand him in good stead in this race.

“The plan was to come to this race. He normally has a mid-season campaign in the US, so I presume that is the plan,” the jockey told At The Races.

“He’ll have his race here, he hasn’t got a Group One penalty, so that makes it a good bit easier than in the Jockey Club Stakes (third to Universal).

“It doesn’t look the strongest race so he has a chance as long as he’s fit enough to do himself justice.

“He’s got good form over a mile and a quarter and has won two Grade Ones over a mile and a half so he has a bit of both – speed and stamina.”
