Goodwood pair set for rematch

Saddler’s Rock and Electrolyser could renew rivalries in next week’s Weatherbys Insurance Lonsdale Cup at York.

Goodwood pair set for rematch

The pair, trained by John Oxx and Clive Cox, filled first and fourth place respectively in the Goodwood Cup last time.

Saddler’s Rock had previously finished a narrow third to Colour Vision in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and won the Doncaster Cup last term.

Oxx believes his charge prefers quicker ground and would not want to see too much rain ahead of the Group Two heat.

“The plan is still to head to York, all being well,” he said. He’s a top of the ground horse, although he ran well enough on softish ground in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, better than expected. Maybe as he’s getting older, he is getting more adaptable in terms of ground.”

Cox admits Electrolyser will be up against it again if he heads to the Knavesmire. The seven-year-old made a bold bid three furlongs out at Goodwood but eventually had to settle for a two-and-a-half-length fourth.

“I know he was a 66-1 shot but he had previously been second in the Goodwood Cup so it wasn’t a surprise to see him put in a performance like that. He’s come out of the race really well. He’s on as high a rating as he’s ever been in 109, he’s a grand old servant. That (Lonsdale) is obviously equally competitive and we will be bumping heads with the same sort of horses but he’s in good nick.”
