Sure Reef can recoup losses over longer trip

Michael Halford’s Sure Reef can finally enjoy a turn in the Anglo Printers’ Handicap at Killarney tonight.

Sure Reef can recoup losses over longer trip

He is certainly proving a frustrating sort, but a little contest such as this is certainly within his compass.

Sure Reef was a morning-price gamble at Leopardstown five days ago, but the race didn’t work out for him and the three-year-old failed to deliver.

The Choisir colt was unsuited by the lack of pace in a six-horse affair and was caught flatfooted early in the straight, before running on late to finish a length and a half second behind King Of Dudes.

Partnered by a 7lbs claimer on that occasion, the selection now has Shane Foley in the plate and will be well suited by stepping up an extra two furlongs in trip.

Joseph O’Brien has to be regarded as a serious contender for the jockeys’ championship and is fancied to further boost his prospects by landing a double. He can start with Wonderful in the Irish Stallion Farms’ EBF Fillies Maiden. She ran well enough when third to heavily-backed Colliding Worlds at Leopardstown and the more the surface dries out the better.

O’Brien can complete a double on Learn in the Easy Clean Ltd Race. The son of Galileo was third behind Sharestan and Mizani in a Listed event at the Curragh last month and now has his sights considerably lowered.

Oliver McKiernan’s very much in-form Whatever Jacksays is the one to beat in the Killarney Veterinary Clinic Race.

He is in rare form at the moment, arriving here on the back of three successes over flights and a fine display over a mile and six at Leopardstown when slamming subsequent winners, Dare To Doubt and Oilily.

Definite Class, a winner twice over fences and then on the flat at Tramore, gets the vote in the Christy McSweeney Memorial Novice Chase.
