Bookies hit back on day two

Victories for So You Think in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes and Duntle in the finale were the only bright spots in an otherwise dismal afternoon for punters on the second day of Royal Ascot.

Bookies hit back on day two

Aidan O’Brien’s Australian import So You Think was available at odds against in the morning but was hammered into 4-5 favouritism with one reported bet of £100,000 at even money struck.

Duntle was the 4-1 favourite in the Sandringham Handicap which closed the card. Other than that Ishvana at 20-1, Joviality at 11-1, Prince Of Johanne at 16-1 and Ceiling Kitty at 20-1 hit backers hard.

William Hill reported: “So You Think – who we took on at enhanced odds of 6-4 — left a huge dent in what would otherwise have been a decent day where double-figure winners such as Ishvana and Ceiling Kitty sandwiched the well-backed Prince of Wales’s hero.”

Stan James were singing from a similar song sheet with Rory Jiwani saying: “The day started really well with Ishvana and Joviality obliging at double-figure SPs, but our decision to take on So You Think in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes backfired in a big way. We were 11-10 before he opened up at evens on the first show and returned the 4-5 favourite.

“Duntle obliged for David Wachman in the last, the Sandringham Handicap, but we kept her on side so she didn’t cost us too much. All in all, a good day to put us back on terms after yesterday.”

Coral see the battle as finely poised going into day two. David Stevens said: “After two days the score sits at 1-1, with Fame And Glory the horse we fear most on day three.” For Ladbrokes, David Williams said: “We certainly had the better of it on day two at Ascot.”
