Gold Cup transferred to Saturday card

THE thetote.com Gold Cup, worth €84,000 to the winner, will now be run at Punchestown on Saturday, after it was one of two chases abandoned yesterday.

The track was inspected by Ruby Walsh, clerk of the course, Brendan Sheridan, and Punchestown racing manager, Richie Galway.

Torrential rain — some 15 millimetres fell by lunchtime — led to the chase track being waterlogged and officials had no choice but to call off the Gold Cup and the Guinness Handicap Chase. Punchestown was also lashed by high winds for much of the day.

Racing was put back from 3.40 to 4.55, with just five races on the card, made up of three over flights and two bumpers.

The Gold Cup will now form part of an eight-race programme on Saturday and will go off at 4.25.

Racing today is subject to an 8am inspection.

Should the meeting be postponed then it will be transferred to Sunday. Navan too is scheduled to race on Sunday and that meeting will also go ahead.
