Rare hurdles winner for Channon

Knox Overstreet gave Mick Channon a rare winner over hurdles when landing the Bhest Racing To School Novices’ Selling Hurdle at Exeter yesterday.

Channon is best known in racing circles as a multiple Group One-winning Flat trainer, but this four-year-old has been sent jumping and has hinted at ability in better company.

Sent off at 7-1 in the hands of Will Kennedy, Knox Overstreet picked up well in the home straight and got away with an error at the final flight to beat favourite Edgware Road by seven lengths.

“He’s off the Flat and is not over-big, so I think the better ground was going to be the key to him,” said Kennedy.

“He jumped well and he’s done it nicely. He did go through the last a bit but he was always going forward.

“I rode out for Mick all last summer and one or two of them I sat on I said would be ideal to go jumping.

“He sent a couple of them hurdling and they’ve both won now.”
