AFTER a hugely consistent year, Piercestown Sand claimed a well-deserved big race success when emerging triumphant in the final of the Red Mills Waterford Masters at Kilcohan Park on Saturday night.

Mines A Pint was fastest away but he was soon headed by Sparta Maestro who led into the turn. But, as Sparta Maestro tried to cut the turn, Piercestown Sand forced his way through on the fence, in turn bumping his rival.

Suddenly Shanks Whelan’s Piercestown Sand built a clear advantage and, entering the back straight Piercestown Sand had two and a half lengths in hand on Sparta Maestro and he increased his advantage to three by halfway.
