IRELAND’S junior eventing team finished their dressage phase at the European Championships at Vale Sabroso, Portugal, yesterday in the silver medal position.

Three of the team scored sub-50, with Tori Dixon and Shadow Light starring on 45 penalties to leave her holding the individual bronze slot. Katie Moffatt (Pick N Mix II) ended on 48.5 pens, while Angela Dennehy (Decent Gamble) put up 49.6 pens. Lucca Stubington (Kilminchy Condor) provided the discard with 52.5 pens .

The team total of 143.1 leaves them just 4.5 adrift of leaders Germany going into today’s cross-country.

In show jumping, Peter Smyth takes a four-point lead into tomorrow’s final leg of the TRM National Grand Prix League at Kildare International, where he will bid to hold off a last-gasp challenge from Mervyn Clarke.

Meanwhile, Castlemartyr Resort in east Cork is to host an invitational dressage challenge next Tuesday as a prelude to the Johnson and Perrott Land Rover International Horse Trials, which begin at Ballindenisk, Watergrasshill on Wednesday. Admission is free to the winner-takes-all dressage challenge.
