Double result for punters

HISTORY was created at Kilbeggan last night when a number of on-course bookmakers offered ‘double result’ for the first time.

Double result can prove very costly for layers and is a concession which has long been enjoyed by off-course punters.

The way it works is if a horse wins a race, and is subsequently disqualified, bookmakers will still pay on the original winner.

They will also pay on the horse who is then promoted to first place, thus having two losers in the one contest.

Among those who adopted the new concept at Kilbeggan were Ladbrokes, John Harney and Sean Graham.

It will now be available on all racecourses and it is thought most bookmakers will follow. The concession will be subject to the same conditions as in the betting shops, basically that a horse cannot take the wrong course or carry the wrong weight, while a stake limit may apply.
