Death of George Williams

Trained by Pat Taaffe and partnered by Bobby Beasley, Captain Christy won the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1974.

He was by Christy’s Bow, out of a mare called Mon Capitaine, and first saw the light of day at Williams’ Carrignaveen Stud outside Inniscarra in 1967.

Williams sold Captain Christy at Tattersalls Sales at Ballsbridge for 290 guineas to Tom Nicholson and was later quoted as saying he was “not unhappy leaving Dublin that day.’’
