Tempo can blaze a trail

IT will be a major surprise should in-form Paul Townend leave Punchestown this afternoon empty- handed.

Tempo can blaze a trail

He partners Blazing Tempo in the Grade 3 EBF Lombardstown Breeders’ Mares Novice Chase and the six-year-old is the nap choice.

The daughter of Accordion had her first run for Willie Mullins at Clonmel in November and, on her debut over fences, was thrown in at the deep end in a Grade 3.

But she came through the test with flying colours, beating Cool Quest (levels) by a length and three parts. The selection is entitled to come on plenty for that much-needed outing and should prove hard to beat.

Townend is a significant booking for Dermot Weld’s Unaccompanied and she is the choice in the Festival Hospitality On Sale three-year-old Maiden Hurdle.

She is certain to have been well schooled for this test and was smart enough on the flat, scoring at Galway and Killarney.

Another Townend possibility is Some Target in the Punchestown Hospitality Beginners Chase. He ran well when third to Magnanimity and Arabella Boy on this track last time and is preferred to the enigmatic Alpha Ridge.

On The Way Out and Jumbo Rio will be tough nuts to crack in the Follow Punchestown Facebook Hurdle but Secant Star, yet another for Townend, might just improve past both of them.
