Only after that contest was it a mathematical impossibility for Richard Hughes to overhaul Paul Hanagan, who had led right from the start of the campaign and hung on by just two winners to seal his first ever title.

The likeable Warrington-born 30-year-old was forced to travel the length and breadth of Britain in recent weeks in search of valuable winners, as Hughes pushed him every step of the way.
