HRI to investigate on-course bookie

ON-course bookmaker Ger Dalton is under investigation by Horse Racing Ireland following his failure to honour winning bets at Listowel last Saturday.

Dalton didn’t price up the final race, having reportedly run out of money.

As a result numerous disappointed and disgruntled punters were forced to form a lengthy queue outside of the HRI levy office. The word last night was that scores of patrons are now owed many thousands of euro.

HRI’s betting division manager, Paul Finegan, said: “I can confirm that Ger Dalton is under investigation regarding bets at Listowel on September 18.

“We have to go through due-process before commenting further and all HRI’s betting division can do is to sanction that the bookmakers’ committee either suspend or revoke a bookmaker’s licence.

“It’s the first instance of this in at least twenty years and the next step will be get in touch with the bookmaker and try to get to the bottom of this and see if we can secure payment for punters.’
