Moore comes in for Rip ride

RYAN MOORE will get the leg up on Rip Van Winkle when the colt bids for back-to-back successes in the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood tomorrow.

Moore comes in for Rip ride

The Galileo colt was a brilliant winner of the Group One prize 12 months ago but needs to bounce back to form after disappointing on his first start of the campaign in the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot.

With stable jockey Johnny Murtagh still on the sidelines due to suspension, trainer Aidan O’Brien has moved quickly to snap up the services of the reigning champion jockey.

The Ballydoyle handler also saddles Beethoven and Encompassing.

Rip Van Winkle will certainly face a stiff test with Richard Hannon’s Canford Cliffs bidding for his third successive win at the highest level following glorious displays in the Irish 2000 Guineas and the St James’s Palace Stakes.

Chris Wall’s stable star Premio Loco steps up to Group One company for the first time following his recent win at Ascot, while Mac Love makes his first appearance since winning at Goodwood last September.

Beacon Lodge and Dream Eater complete the eight-runner line-up.

Meanwhile, Tom Queally is confident a recent win at Chester will have done Lord Shanakill the power of good ahead of his run in the Betfair Cup at Glorious Goodwood this afternoon.

The four-year-old failed to find the target on his first three outings since joining Henry Cecil, but scored a shade cosily in a Listed heat on the Roodee earlier this month.

He returns to Pattern company on the opening day of Glorious Goodwood and Queally is hoping for a bold show.

“He’d been running in Group One races so we dropped him in class at Chester, when he won pretty comfortably in a performance that will hopefully have given him a real confidence boost,” said Queally.

“This trip is ideal for him and it looks the perfect spot. Air Chief Marshal looks the one to beat, but I am going there pretty hopeful.”

Clive Cox also has a strong hand as he saddles last year’s runner-up Balthazaar’s Gift as well as Dunelight, placed in this race 2008 and 2007.
