Poignant race for Gouldings

THE Dermot Casey Mares’ Handicap Hurdle at Cork this evening will be especially poignant for the Goulding family from Ballymote, just outside Tallow, writes Pat Keane.

The veteran Heartansoul, an 11-year-old, does duty for the Gouldings in this contest. She is now in the care of Arthur Goulding, but was formerly trained by his brother, Philip.

On Wednesday however Philip, only 31-years-of age, lost a long and gallant fight with leukaemia.

Heartansoul has won three races in her life - two hurdles and a chase - and all have come at Cork.

Philip also trained Fivestar Alstars, which won six races for him, three over hurdles, two chases and once on the flat.
