David Wachman’s Griffin was backed as if defeat was out of the question in the Thomastown Stables Median Auction Maiden.
He won alright, but had to dig down deep to beat market-rival, Free Art, a short head. Then, to continue the agony for on-course punters, Griffin had to survive a stewards’ inquiry.
The pair came very close and there was a little interference, but it came literally on the line and there was a never a possibility of an altered result.
Griffin was backed at 5-4 and 6-5 in the morning and from a little evens to 1-2 at the track.
Johnny Murtagh partnered Griffin and completed a double aboard Aidan O’Brien’s Big Occasion in the Tipperary Hidden Heritage Maiden.

Taken to the front five furlongs from home, he found plenty for pressure to hold Raffaella Santi in the straight.
Paramount, trained by Ted Walsh for his wife Helen, and ridden by their daughter, Katie, won the Come Walking In Tipperary Handicap.
He certainly got the full Katie treatment, hitting the front over a furlong out and then holding on to beat Summerlea a short head.
Commented Ted: “He swishes his old tail and is what he is. He’s better on the flat than over jumps and will now go to Belllewstown for something similar.”
Humor Me Rene didn’t look particularly well in off 9-6 for the South Tipperary Tourism Handicap, but nothing could have been further from the truth.
She was driven into the lead inside the furlong pole by Declan McDonogh, quickly shooting three and a half lengths to the good.
