Dettori’s dash to Goodwood pays off on the double

FRANKIE DETTORI made the dash from Epsom to Goodwood well worthwhile by winning on both his mounts at last night’s evening meeting.

Dettori’s dash to Goodwood pays off on the double

The Italian partnered Neebras to an easy victory in the New Forests EBF Maiden Stakes and Holberg, making his first start for Godolphin in the feature race of the night, the WHEB Group Stakes.

Dettori was also on the mark at Epsom on Saeed bin Suroor’s Shakespearean, who just like Holberg had joined from Mark Johnston’s Middleham yard.

Holberg was making his first appearance since winning the Queens Vase at Royal Ascot but that did not put punters off and he was backed into 3-1 favouritism.

For some reason the other jockeys seemed content to give Dettori an easy lead on Holberg and as usual he rode them to sleep, with the Halling colt going further and further clear in the straight to win by six lengths.

Luca Cumani would have been thrilled with Manighar who chased him home in second and Opinion Poll was third. Royal Ascot will be beckoning for impressive juvenile Neebras (1-2 favourite) after his stroll to victory over Arabian Star.

Switched from David Lanigan’s yard after a highly promising debut behind Richard Hannon’s Strong Suit, he came home four lengths clear.
