Coolcashin set for winning debut

COOLCASHIN gets the nap to make a winning debut over fences in the Newberry Beginners Chase at Cork tonight.

He has 17 rivals with which to cope, but none of them are as big a worry as the possibility that two miles round this fast track might prove on the sharp side for the selection.

Nevertheless, we have to put such concerns to one side, on the basis Coolcashin is easily the best horse in the contest.

Michael Bowe’s gelding should strip fresh and well, having been rested since producing a game display to beat Essex and Powerstation in a Grade 3 Hurdle over two and a half miles at Fairyhouse in mid-April.

Liam Burke’s Oscar Rebel can land the Coolagown Stud EBF Mares Chase. The ex-winning pointer has already had a pop over fences, finishing third behind Bohemian Lass on unsuitably heavy ground at Clonmel back in November.

A classy sort when on song, she does have two Grade 3 hurdle successes to her credit, Oscar Rebel performed creditably last time when fifth to Voler La Vedette at Punchestown.

The Cork Racecourse Mallow Handicap Hurdle is fiercely competive, but an interesting candidate is Tony Martin’s Royal County Star, who runs off a mark 29lbs below his rating over fences.

Aidan O’Brien’s Rockhampton is the choice in the four-runner Omeath Race at Dundalk tonight.

A smooth winner of a maiden at Leopardstown, he then took third behind Nehaam and Monitor Closely in a valuable sales event at Newmarket.

Monitor Closely gave the form a sizeable boost yesterday, finishing fifth to Black Bear Island in the Dante Stakes at York.

Mister Tee is the one to beat in the Armagh GAA Fundraiser 12th July Maiden. His third to Gold Bubbles and Air Chief Marshal at Leopardstown speaks for itself and Ger Lyons’ colt may have got bogged down in the testing ground when disappointing in the contest won by Atasari at the Curragh 11 days ago.
