Gosden ace Infallible

INFALLIBLE swooped to the head of the stamjamesuk.com 1000 Guineas market when coming from the clouds to take the Leslie Harrison Memorial Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket yesterday.

Despite Speciosa being the only filly in the last 10 years to progress and stamp her class on the Classic, Coral make John Gosden’s unbeaten daughter of Pivotal their new 3-1 market leader.

Stan James and Ladbrokes offer 5-1, while totesport make her the 4-1 co-favourite from 16s alongside French raider Natagora and John Dunlop’s Muthabara.

After being slowly away, the 7-2 favourite was settled stone last by Jimmy Fortune before smoothly tracking past rivals to ease away in the final two furlongs and secure the Group Three prize by three and a half lengths.

Gosden, who struck with all of his runners on the card to complete a spectacular 1,785-1 four-timer, said: “She’s been working nicely this spring and had done two nice pieces Racecourse Side on the bridle.

“We planned to drop her in, but she got left behind and the experience will have done her good.

“She’s a fine filly but she’ll have to be damn good to beat the French grey filly (Natagora), who won a little race here called the Cheveley Park.

“Our horse is not that experienced after just two runs and Natagora has to be the one to beat at the moment.”

Gosden’s main 2000 Guineas hope Raven’s Pass will be tested in today’s Craven Stakes, but he added another string to his bow for that race as 11-10 favourite Virtual got off the mark in the Alex Scott Maiden Stakes.

Gosden added: “I think that was a decent maiden. He is in the Guineas and we will take our time and think about it.

“He’s also in the Derby which shows I think he will get further.”

William Hill quote Virtual – who like Infallible is owned by Cheveley Park Stud - at 40-1 for the colts’ Classic.
