Big two on course for National service

SUNDAY’S Bank Of Scotland (Ire) National Stakes at the Curragh is firmly on course to be one of the races of the season, with New Approach and Rio De La Plata both yesterday confirmed on target for the Group One showpiece.

Big two on course for National service

New Approach, unbeaten in three and heading the betting with some firms for next year’s Stan James 2000 Guineas, had an alternative option in today’s Parknasilla Hotels Goffs Million.

Sheikh Mohammed recently purchased a half-share in New Approach, while Rio De La Plata was supplemented for the race by the Godolphin team this week, although his participation had hinged on him swerving the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster.

Also close to the top of the Guineas betting, Rio De La Plata looked a class act in taking the Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

Bolger could have a second string to his bow in Via Galilei, who bolted before the start on his debut last week but still managed to finish third.

The County Carlow trainer said: “New Approach goes for the National Stakes on Sunday. He’s very well.

“I haven’t decided about Via Galilei, as it will only be a week between races so I will leave it as late as possible before making a decision.”

Of Rio De La Plata, trainer Saeed Bin Suroor reported: “So far he has been fine and the plan is to take him to Ireland. He won’t run at Doncaster.

“He did his final piece of work two days ago and I was very happy with him.”

Also in the National Stakes is the impressive Prix Morny winner Myboycharlie.

Cashmans make Myboycharlie the 7-4 favourite from 2-1, with New Approach reportedly friendless having headed the Cork-based firm’s market earlier in the week.

National Stakes, Cashmans bet: 7-4 Myboycharlie (from 2-1), 2-1 New Approach, 9-4 Rio De La Plata, 10-1 Famous Name, 12-1 Aidan O’Brien stable (from 8-1), 50-1 Norman Invader, Via Galilei, 500-1 Prize Spirit.
