THERE were shocks in the opening two semi-finals of the AIB Stakes at Curraheen Park on Saturday night.

Clearwater Jack (evens) was carried wide at the opening bend in the first heat and made his exit.

The pacemaking Beechers Girl opened up a big lead as a result but needed all of it as, in the end, she only hung on by the minimum margin from the strong finishing Blackstone Kewell in 28.57.
