Kevin Prendergast’s colt began by finishing a length and a quarter second behind Linsalata at Leopardstown, when noted doing all his best work in the closing stages.
The son of King’s Best then ran into an Aidan O’Brien special at Gowran Park earlier this month. Driven to the front over a furlong down by Chris Hayes, Wrong Number was grabbed close home by Frozen Fire, the verdict half a length.
Frozen Fire could be a star of the future and it may well take a similarly talented newcomer to lower Wrong Number’s colours on this occasion.
Feature event is the Listed Kerryman Ruby Stakes and, despite the fact there are only eight possibilities, this is particularly tricky.
The nod falls on Crooked Throw, who looks guaranteed to handle the surface and was a trifle unlucky when beaten a short head by Incline in the very valuable Tote Mile Handicap at Galway.
Absolute Image (rec. 2lbs), who renews rivalry, was a head behind in third and the form was boosted when Incline went on to score easily at Sligo.
Austin Leahy’s Wesaidneveragain has a leading chance in the five furlongs Ballybeggan Racegoers’ Club Handicap.
Well drawn, he runs off a mark just 4lbs higher, having been touched off by Musical Review over six at Naas.
Best bet at Kilbeggan tonight is Willie Mullins’ Taipan’s Way in the Bumper. One assumes he has been waiting on some decent ground, not having been seen since beaten a length into second by Colm Murphy’s Zaarito on this track back in June.
